During your school trip to Virginia Beach you may want to explore the Adam Thoroughgood house. Students of all ages will enjoy this unique experience. Your group can take a tour of the location where you will learn about Adam Thoroughgood who was one of Virginia’s first colonists. The house is known for its dramatic turned staircase and other extraordinary architectural touches. During the tour, the students will have the opportunity to explore the passage and parlor which is furnished with furniture from the 1700s. You will hear stories about Adam Thoroughgood and his success as a colonist. The house is a historic treasure and has been restored. It was designated a national historic landmark in 1960. There are costumed guides who will take you through the house and answer any questions the students may want to ask. The tour is a half hour long. The house is located near the Lynnhaven River and is in a quiet neighborhood. It was constructed in the 1680s. The students will have the opportunity to view beautiful gardens during the visit. The English furniture in the house is from the 17th and early 18th century. Adam Thoroughgood was a successful tobacco farmer and an indentured servant. The museum offers entertaining educational programs for the student group to explore. Students will learn through interactive exhibits and activities. One of the programs is known as the Life Along the Chesapeake where the group will learn about the Chesapeake Indians. Another program is called Indenture Adventure. During the presentation, students will learn about the institution of slavery and how its abolishment has influenced the present day world.
