Legacy Heritage Tours provide student groups heading out on an exploration of historic Atlanta, Georgia, privileged insight into its rich African American heritage while illuminating black life and achievement in the city from pre-Civil War to the present. We are all acquainted with the legacies of prominent African-Americans: Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. DuBois, James Weldon Johnson and Hank Aaron – the list goes on – and Legacy Tours proudly introduce you to “their” Atlanta. Take your seat and relax in climate-controlled comfort as you and your travel partners discover and explore wonderful historic landmarks; you’ll cruise historic Auburn Avenue, once the “richest black street” in the world, where you’ll see Dr. Martin Luther King’s birth home, his tomb, the Civil Rights Museum and the Ebenezer Baptist Church where he was baptized, and which he co-pastored right alongside his father. Visit a world-renowned black educational complex: see Spelman College, Morehouse College, the Interdenominational Theological Center and other important black institutions. Tour the Alonzo Herndon House Museum, a stately Greek Revival-style mansion built in 1905 by Atlanta’s first black millionaire, and hear the story of his prodigious rise from abject slavery to astonishing wealth. The city of Atlanta is well-known for its lovely homes and beautiful landscapes; Heritage tours showcase its finest African-American neighborhoods and famed “grand abodes”. Excursions may be customized to include additional attractions like the Apex Museum, the African-American Griot Teaching Museum, the Hammond House, the Wren’s Nest and the Shrine of the Black Madonna Bookstore.
