Hanauma Bay, located on the southeast tip of Oahu about 30 minutes from Waikiki, was once a volcanic crater. Over time, crashing waves eroded away one side of this crater and sea water swept in, making Hanauma the “curved bay” for which it got its Hawaiian name.

Today this bay is full of living coral reefs and is home to a colorful variety of ocean animals. A morning spent snorkeling at Hanauma Bay is a wonderful way for your group to see these magnificent sea creatures up close while enjoying the beautiful blue ocean of Hawaii. Never been snorkeling before?  Not a problem!  The shallow waters of Hanauma are safe for snorkelers of any skill level, and the beach is well-staffed with lifeguards.  You can bring your own equipment, or rent flippers, mask, and a clean, sterilized snorkel on site. Upon arrival, your group will watch a short video about protecting the ocean life, and then you are free to enter the water!  Out in the bay, you will see beautiful coral reefs and be surrounded by fish of all colors, shapes, and sizes. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a sea turtle, an eel, an octopus, or a squid! This is definitely a place to bring your underwater camera.

If you feel like drying off for awhile, the sandy beach is a great place to relax in the sun and enjoy the beautiful scenery. You will also find an information booth on the beach where members of your group can have fun identifying the fish they saw while snorkeling. The bathrooms and showers are conveniently located nearby, and there is even a snack bar at the top of the hill in case anyone gets hungry. If you want to learn more about Hanauma Bay, the visitor’s center has many interesting interactive displays about the area and its wildlife.

Whether you come to Hanauma for the snorkeling, sea life, sand, or scenery, you will not be disappointed!
