San Antonio Zoo

“San Antonio Zoo” by Stuart Seeger

The San Antonio Zoo started in 1914 when Colonel George W. Brackenridge placed deer, elk, buffalo, monkeys, and four bears onto land that he had deeded over to the city. At that time, Brackenridge could not have imagined how large and popular his zoo would become. This zoo is home to over 3,500 animals from 600 species. Plus, it has one of the largest bird collections in the United States. One popular attraction is the butterfly garden. This garden holds 15 to 20 different species of butterflies of many beautiful shapes and colors. This exhibit cost an extra $1.50 per person because of the need to restock often. However, the site of these small creatures flying around and possibly landing on you makes it well worth it! The San Antonio Zoo offers a multitude of educational programs for kids of all ages. This gives you the opportunity to spark interest for science and nature into their minds. They even offer to design a program that fits exactly to your school trips wants. Today, the zoo has an estimated annual count of over 1,000,000 guests; 80,000 which are school children visiting on field trips.
